On the feedback of a student who read my blog, I am now going to mention about the students in Thapar. But there is one thing that must be understood before I start off. As we all know, the teachers will mostly not like the post on teachers, similarly most students won't like this post. But this one is equally true.
I have many a times mentioned that there are a few nonsense causing rules in Thapar University, which hinder the creativity of students, which bind your imagination. For those who are reading this blog in real time, the latest addition is much known. The college main gate will close for entry into college at 7:00PM instead of 9:30PM, a step which indeed makes no sense.
But let us, for once, analyze why such steps need to be taken. I have recently read that while Thapar is trying to compete with the IITs, it is moving to be another LPU. What do you think distinguishes IIT from LPU? It is the students. The IIT students are mostly mature, LPU students are least bothered about the consequences of actions. A student in IIT is dedicated, as it has been proven in the entrance exams. If the Thapar students show some dedication to improve their future, such rules won't be needed. But if students go out and drink(not coke that I am talking of), what is the difference between Thapar and LPU? The brand value? Relax, that will also fade off soon. It is the students which make a college good or bad, and I don't see the silver lining in Thapar.
Students seem to take more pleasure in creating nonsense rather than doing something constructive. Someone anonymously commented on one of the posts in this blog itself asking me if I regret the decision of joining Thapar. This is what makes me sad sir. Students are not oriented to learn something new, they only care about grades and nonsense. If you are studying something at the off examination season, or something which is out of course, you are considered a nerd. Why? It is my field, and I am interested in it. I never took up engineering to earn money. There is money in all fields. I took engineering, specifically Computer Engineering as that is my interest, my passion. So I need to be on the move every-time, learning something new. Friends, competition out there is tough. Get on your toes, or nothing will happen.
I am sure the day Thapar will do away with the attendance criteria, students won't attend a single class. All they will do is roam about hostel to hostel shouting, playing music on high volume. And the worst part is everyone will enjoy this. And the few who don't will be looked down upon.
Why, on the first hand, can you people not do something constructive? You get a Mid Semester break, two End Semester breaks. In addition, there are weekends and sometimes 3 day breaks. Use those constructively and show the university we can do much more than killing time. Then, the University will surely respect your point.
The meaning being that yes, the University needs to make different rules for different students, but they just cannot do that, managing that with an intake of 1600 students a year is impossible. We need to be good. Use the breaks for constructive works, and not for nonsense. Surely, the college will listen to you. The best example I have is Thapar Express. They worked hard, and the college supported them to some extent. The support will increase as the initiative of students increases. It is NOT a school, it's a college. Governed by students, if they are mature enough. In the past, students have often proven that they are not mature enough. Now, the responsibility to prove that we are mature lies on us. Let us take the power of functioning in our hands.
